Social Media - The Role Of Social Media In Marketing
67
Social media has seen a phenomenal growth in popularity in recent years, so much so that it is now an incredibly important and powerful tool for internet marketers. When examining the rise of social media it is necessary to firstly define exactly what it is, before explaining why it is so useful to internet marketers.
The term “social media” refers to any online platform which allows users to communicate and interact with each other. Indeed, any website which is deemed to be part of the social media grouping can be said to be designed specifically to make communication and participation as engaging as possible for users.
There are some multi-million dollar businesses which are involved in the social media industry. Sites like Facebook and Twitter have millions of users worldwide. These two sites are very different in terms of what they offer to users, however they are both designed to facilitate and enhance communication, and are therefore social in nature. They are also both used extensively by internet marketers.
These sites, and the many others which make up social media in general, are so important to internet marketers for several reasons. The first reason for their importance is the massive size of their user bases. Each member of a social media site equates to a potential new customer for businesses, and the fact that there are millions of them means that social media represents an opportunity not to be missed.
The second, and most important, reason is that social media platforms allow businesses to communicate in real time with their customers. This presents an opportunity to offer a unique, personalized service like never before. The result is that relationships can be built between businesses and their customers which can lead to brand loyalty. One of the ways in which businesses develop these relationships is to offer their customers special offers and competitions. As an example, a business on Twitter could tweet their followers a link to get money off a particular product.
Businesses can vary their marketing, and the social media platform they use, depending on the product they want to promote and their intended customer demographic. For example, the company BlendTec grew a massive following with their YouTube videos under the slogan “Will It Blend?” This was an ingeniousadvertizingcampaign for blenders, but it wouldn't have been anywhere near as effective if it had been described in a blog, for example. A high profile company will have a presence on all of the major social media sites, and will use each one independently to connect with their customers. They will also, however, encourage their customers to join them on each site.
The internet, and social media in particular, has created a variety of new ways for businesses to communicate and engage with their customers. Whether using podcasts, blogs, instructional videos, or any other method, businesses have never before had so many avenues for promoting their products. The speed at whichadvertizingcampaigns can be created and distributed, and their potential audience, highlights the fact that social media can be an extremely powerful marketing tool.
